Character Name: Mogget
Series: The Old Kingdom
Age: Ancient af
From When?: The end of Sabriel. His fight with Kerrigor went awry, destroying them both instead of allowing them to be bound by Sabriel.

Inmate Justification: Mogget is a terrible, awful, no-good creature with an enormous ego, who doesn’t care about anything except himself. He is sly and manipulative, will openly lie for his own gain or just to create chaos, and is completely indifferent to the welfare of living things. While his power - and what he might do with it - is held in check by the magic in his collar, if he is released he is immediately bent upon revenge against the Abhorsen bloodline for his centuries of enslavement.

Arrival: He agreed, but he’s not happy about it.

Abilities/Powers: While bound, Mogget retains some ability in teleportation and shapeshifting. He is able to seemingly appear at the top or bottom of a ladder without ever having climbed it and is able to change his form into a variety of different ones. He is sometimes seen in the shape of a small albino man with sharp teeth (in this shape he goes by the name of Moregrim) but is capable of taking several other shapes should he choose to.

If unbound (ie, if his collar is removed), Mogget becomes a Free Magic creature of enormous destructive power, and he will absolutely use that power to make a mess if he is given the freedom and time to do so.

Inmate Information:
Mogget’s crimes against not only individuals but the world within the canon are, at this point in canon, both multitude and all things he is entirely unapologetic about.

To begin with, his betrayal/abandonment of the other seven Bright Shiners in their opposition to Orannis led directly to their being unable to banish him entirely and only being able to seal him away, meaning that down the line he was ultimately able to break free again and threaten the existence of every living thing.

He has also on at least one occasion attempted to manipulate people and events in order to break the Charter entirely, which would have freed both himself and every other bound Free Magic creature and caused an immense amount of destructive chaos. He didn’t care about the other creatures so much as he cared about himself and his own freedom, and certainly would have gone on to utterly destroy the entire Abhorsen bloodline if he had been successful in that. He also did not care what happened to Clariel while he was trying to do it so long as the plan succeeded, and was frustrated to be thwarted in his attempt by the arrival of the current Abhorsen of that era.

Mogget has attempted to kill multiple Abhorsens, including Sabriel, multiple times (and he’d do it again). He isn’t sorry about this and will happily manipulate situations in order to get out of his collar so he can have another go at it. Unfortunately for him, his tendency to monologue while freed means he gets re-bound before he manages to follow through.

He is a capricious creature, given to being contrary and lying by omission, often for his own amusement or to highlight the failings in others. The level of dignity with which he carries himself can be, on occasion, broken by such things as unexpectedly getting wet, catbalm, or the prospect of food. In these ways and in others, Mogget often shows distinctly cat-like behaviour, something which has been undoubtedly influenced by his time spent in that form. However, there are many things that Mogget does which make it all too clear that he is no ordinary creature, even with the ability to speak set aside.

His motives are not often clear, particularly in earlier canon, and while his loyalty and honesty towards the Abhorsen cannot usually be called into too much question, those traits do rely quite heavily on the personality and will of the Abhorsen themselves. If an Abhorsen is neglectful of their duties - and therefore of him - he is given far more free rein to do as he wishes. He is bluntly spoken and has little patience for foolishness, though if it is insisted upon he will sometimes choose to sit back and allow the inevitable consequences to unfold as a teaching moment. Mogget will not hesitate in 'stirring the pot', delivering well-aimed verbal barbs that at first seem only designed to irritate, but usually have an end purpose in mind.

Though he is undeniably a somewhat lazy, demanding and even selfish creature, openly dismissive of others and possessing an often abrasive temperament, Mogget is capable of empathy and personal connections. Whether he chooses to make use of this is another matter, but he is not the entirely detached creature that his aloofness would have most believe before they have an opportunity to get to know him better.

Despite his shape and small size, Mogget is a highly adaptable, capable individual. He takes a mostly sensible, practical approach to problems and challenges and is able to view most things in an almost coldly objective light, offering solutions to be accepted or ignored. He does not appreciate being ignored, and is not above getting snitty about it.

Unbound, in his (true) form as Yrael, Mogget's personality takes on a far more sinister air. He delights in the idea of finally exacting revenge upon the bloodline which has kept him bound in servitude, though his failing here is that he takes far too long in acting on it. Yrael appears to not wish to give any of the Abhorsen bloodline a quick death, more than implying a preference towards slow, lingering torture for the years of being bound that he has been made to endure. Later in canon, Yrael's personality considerably softens, but at this stage he is a creature of immense power, rage, and a pure desire for vengeance.

Path to Redemption:
In terms of ‘redemption’, simply and also not-so-simply, Mogget needs to learn how to care - about anything, really. This does happen in his canon timeline in part due to his friendship with the Abhorsen Sabriel’s son Sameth, but also due to the kind of attention that Sabriel and her family pay to him - treating him as more of a member of their family than an asset or something to be ignored or put aside.

Through them and the experiences he has alongside Sameth and the Abhorsen’s other family he learns appreciation for the small things in life - sunlight, birds, kindness - and finally finds value in existence and in the living world around him enough to be moved to save it. This is something that could be replicated on the Barge through interpersonal relationships and the trials that mount from monthly events. That isn’t to say it would be an easy path to take him down. Without Sameth’s influence and taken away from the requirement to obey the incumbent Abhorsen, the effort to actually get him to care about anything will be more of an uphill struggle.

Outwardly, Mogget will react to being on the Barge with openly passive dismissal. Inwardly, he will be absolutely seething. That he just ended up being beholden to another power, under more restrictions than he was under before, is something that is going to chafe at him immediately and for quite a while. He will react to this by being incredibly snarky at all times.

He is most likely to regard wardens as simply being someone who can serve his immediate needs and will have little use for them outside of that. Ones who are distant or passive will find he has a tendency to create more trouble while under their ‘care’ while ones who are more interested in him will be met with more engagement, but mostly in the form of demands. Those who do take the time are more likely to find that he is a lot of bark and very little bite, inclined more towards being lazy if he feels like his needs are being met.

He will not react well to being ignored, being dismissed, or being ordered around. The former two because he is a cat and the latter one because he does not view anyone on the Barge as holding the authority to give him orders. Wardens who are attentive and helpful to him will be more likely to get results - and this doesn’t mean bowing to his every whim, as he may also respect people who have the capacity to stand up to him without getting emotional or unreasonable about it.

Something that may be a sticking point is the knowledge that his graduation would give the warden a deal. Part of his development may also hinge upon what this deal is and whether or not he can accept that it is worth his own attention. His relationship with the warden would also carry some weight here, so he would definitely need the ‘right’ warden for a permanent pairing to work.

Additionally, to be a successful warden for Mogget, that warden will need to earn his respect. This will be given grudgingly and over a long length of time, and perhaps not even fully, but he is not completely unreachable. Unfortunately due to his apathy towards life in general he isn’t likely to even start with a baseline of ‘I respect you because you’re a person’... so it’s probably going to be very aggravating at first. He will push boundaries and demand things and powers returned to him that he probably cannot be trusted with yet, but he is very good at lying. A warden who has not read his file would probably not be well-prepared for what dealing with him is going to be like.

Over the long term, what will prompt change in Mogget is simply being present. He is not accustomed to being actually cared about or being treated as a free being with his own will for any significant length of time and will take time to trust that a warden assigned to him is going to do that, and is being sincere in doing so. His anger at the other Bright Shiners and the Abhorsen bloodline should not be dismissed but should also not be fully legitimised, creating a need for a delicate balance of not casting blame anywhere across that situation while guiding him to come to terms with it and to see the value in things around him.

History: Clariel, Terciel & Elinor, Sabriel, and his wiki page for good measure. I know they are a bit sparse so I can try to write something up if you need, but it may be LONG…

Special Notes: If possible, I would love for there to be the opportunity for a permanent warden to have the ability to remove his collar (usually only an Abhorsen/someone with Abhorsen blood would be able to do this). I’d be sure to let any canon-blind warden player know what this means and how we could play with it if it happened.
