Character Information
Name: Mogget / Yrael.
Canon: The Old Kingdom.
Canon Point: The end of Sabriel, after the defeat of Kerrigor and his re-binding with Ranna.
Age: Exact age is unknown. Thousands of years.
History: Canon Wiki | Mogget/Yrael | Sabriel (book)
Personality: Mogget is thousands of years old, a creature of Free Magic from the very beginnings of the world in which the Old Kingdom series is set. One of the Nine Bright Shiners, the first beings to form conscious thought and will from chaos. His binding into the form of (mainly) a small white cat happened when he refused to be involved in the binding of another of the Nine, fled, and was subsequently tracked down and bound to the service of the Abhorsens, a bloodline of humans who guard the doorways between life and death, making sure that what should be dead stays that way.
He is a capricious creature, given to being contrary and lying by omission, often for his own amusement or to highlight the failings in others. The level of dignity with which he carries himself can be, on occasion, broken by such things as unexpectedly getting wet, catbalm, or the prospect of food. In these ways and in others, Mogget often shows distinctly cat-like behaviour, something which has been undoubtedly influenced by his time spent in that very form. However, there are many things that Mogget does which make it all too clear that he is no ordinary creature, even with the ability to speak set aside.
His motives are not often clear, particularly in earlier canon, and while his loyalty and honesty towards the Abhorsen cannot usually be called into too much question, those traits do rely quite heavily on the personality and will of the Abhorsen themselves. If an Abhorsen is neglectful of their duties - and therefore of him - he is given far more free rein to do as he wishes. He is bluntly spoken and has little patience for foolishness, though if it is insisted upon he will sometimes choose to sit back and allow the inevitable consequences to unfold as a teaching moment. Mogget will not hesitate in 'stirring the pot', delivering well-aimed verbal barbs that at first seem only designed to irritate, but usually have an end purpose in mind.
Though he can come across as a somewhat lazy, demanding and even selfish creature, openly dismissive of others and possessing an occasionally abrasive temperament, Mogget is very capable of empathy and personal connections. Whether he chooses to make use of this is another matter, but he is not the detached creature that his aloofness would have most believe before they have an opportunity to get to know him better. He shows this particular aspect of his personality later in canon in his odd attachment to Sameth, the son of the Abhorsen Sabriel.
Despite his shape and small size, Mogget is a highly adaptable, capable individual. He takes a sensible, practical approach to problems and is able to view most things in an almost coldly objective light, offering solutions to be accepted or ignored. He does not appreciate being ignored, and is not above getting snitty about it.
Unbound, in his (true) form as Yrael, Mogget's personality takes on a far more sinister air. He delights in the idea of finally exacting revenge upon the bloodline which has kept him bound in servitude, though his failing here is that he takes far too long in acting on it. Yrael appears to not wish to give any of the Abhorsen bloodline a quick death, more than implying a preference towards slow, lingering torture for the years of being bound that he has been made to endure. Later in canon, Yrael's personality considerably softens, but at this stage he is a creature of immense power, rage, and a pure desire for vengeance.
It is perhaps worth noting that when he is unbound by Sabriel and almost kills her, he does appear apologetic after he is bound again (though he does not verbally apologise). In the very least, he understands how his actions shook her and does not act as if nothing of note happened.
Abilities & Skills: As Mogget, his powers are limited by the collar he wears. Mogget is capable of some shapeshifting, and appears to be able to teleport or at least use stairs and ladders without aid. In one other form seen in canon, that of a small albino man, he is shown to be able to perform feats of great strength for his size. Most of his power comes in his vast intelligence and his long life, which can sometimes make him seem able to predict events before they happen.
As Yrael, the limit of his power is unspecified. Yrael is a creature of Free Magic, and if unbound (and malicious) would be capable of a great deal of destruction. However, as there are no magic-users of comparable ability to the Abhorsen in Aefenglom, and no Charter mages, his natural power would no doubt be rendered null along with the power in the collar.
Inventory/Companions: One (1) red collar imbued with powerful Charter magic, with a small bell ("Ranna, the Sleeper") hanging from it. The bell, a small replica of the Abhorsen's bell Ranna, makes those around it feel slightly sleepy if they hear it ring.
Choice: Witch
Reason: Outside of the general squick of putting an actual cat-bodied individual through monster mutations and the complicated logistics surrounding that, Mogget is already a creature of some impressive power in his own right and would adapt fairly well to becoming a Witch. It would also give him better opportunity to investigate the Coven and the general power of Aefenglom itself, which he would definitely be interested in.
